When to choose it, and when not to
Choose a watch box when the watch will be sold on its presentation and kept on a dresser after. The weight of 1500 gsm board is the first thing a buyer feels, before they see the watch. A cushion holds the watch as it sits on a wrist, so the face is up and the strap is closed. It suits mechanical and quartz watches, smartwatch straps sold as gifts, and any brand where the box is part of what is being paid for.
Choose a drawer box instead when the watch ships with a booklet and a warranty card that need their own compartment, because a drawer tray divides more neatly. Choose a jewelry box for a strapless watch head or a very small ladies' watch, since a full cushion is oversized for anything under a 1 1/8 in case.

How does the cushion hold the watch?
The cushion is a foam pillow, flocked in velvet, sized so the strap fastens around it with about 3/16 in of tension. The watch sits face up on top and the clasp closes on the underside. It lifts out of the box with the watch on it. We size the cushion to your case width and strap length.
What about a watch with a metal bracelet?
A bracelet clasps around the cushion the same way a strap does, but it needs a slimmer cushion so the links do not stretch. For bracelets we use a 2 1/8 to 2 3/8 in cushion and add a strip of flocked paperboard under the clasp so it does not mark the base. Tell us if the bracelet is sized or unsized when you order.
Why 1500 gsm board?
Because weight is the whole point in a watch box. 1500 gsm board is about 0.1 in thick and a 4.5 inch box on it weighs roughly twice what the same box on 1000 gsm does. That heft is what a buyer feels when they pick it up. For strap-flat boxes over 8 inches we sometimes drop to 1200 gsm on the lid to keep the hinge light.
Can the box include a slot for the warranty card and booklet?
Yes. On a hinged box a slim pocket in the lid lining takes a card up to 3.5 by 2.5 inches. For a booklet we add a false floor under the cushion with a ribbon lift, or move to a drawer box with a divided tray. Both are drawn on the dieline so you can check the sizes before the prototype.
Can the lid be flocked inside as well?
Yes, and on a hinged box it is the finish we usually suggest, because the lid lining is the backdrop for the watch when the box is open. Velvet flocking in black, navy, cream or burgundy is standard. A printed lining with a logo or a line of text is the alternative and is done on the same wrap.
How is the watch box different from the jewelry box?
The watch box is heavier, 1500 gsm board, with a flocked cushion or C-clip insert that holds a strapped watch in a circle, face up, plus room for a warranty card. The jewelry box is lighter, 1000 gsm in small sizes, with a velvet-flocked insert cut for rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets. Both start at 200 units in 12 to 14 business days after proof. Strapped watches go in the watch box; a strapless head or a very small watch fits a jewelry box better.
