Candle boxes
20pt SBS200 minimum · 10 to 14 business daysA candle box is a folding carton built for a glass candle jar or tin, on 20pt SBS with an auto lock base that carries the weight and a paperboard collar that stops the jar rattling. We produce them from 200 units in 10 to 14 business days after proof, for 4 to 16 ounce vessels, usually 3 by 3 by 3.5 to 4.25 by 4.25 by 5 inches.
When to choose it, and when not to
Choose a candle carton when the candle sells from a shelf or ships inside a mailer and the jar needs to arrive unchipped. A bare jar in a mailer breaks at the rim; a carton with a collar holds it clear of the walls and the base lock takes the weight of the glass. It suits 8 and 12 ounce tumblers, 4 ounce tins and three-wick jars up to 16 ounces, and it is the carton candle brands photograph for their listings.
Choose a candle shipper box with a die-cut cradle if the candle ships alone and there is no shelf, since a corrugated mailer protects better and costs less to freight. Choose a magnetic closure box or a candle tube for a gift candle where the box is kept, as a carton is opened once and recycled.

Questions people ask
What size carton fits an 8 ounce candle jar?
A standard 8 ounce straight sided tumbler is about 2.9 inches across and 3.5 inches tall with the lid on, so it fits a 3 by 3 by 3.5 inch carton with the collar. A 12 ounce tumbler is around 3.5 by 4. A 4 ounce tin fits 2.75 by 2.75 by 2.5. Send us your vessel and we fit the collar to it.
Why does it need a base lock rather than a tuck?
Because a 12 ounce jar of wax and glass weighs close to a pound and a half, and a tuck flap pushes open at around 12 ounces. An auto lock or crash lock base folds four flaps over each other and holds about 3 pounds on 20pt. The jar sits on board, not on a tongue, and the carton can be lifted by the lid without the base dropping.
What does the collar do?
It holds the jar by the shoulder so the glass never touches the carton walls and the lid cannot rattle against the top flap. It also centers the jar so the carton stands square on the shelf. The collar is a single die-cut piece that drops in from the top before the jar. For tins without a shoulder we use a base platform instead.
Where does the fire safety warning go?
On the base of the carton or on the back panel, whichever your label supplier prints for. We reserve a 2 by 2 inch zone for it on the dieline so it is not squeezed later. It is common to put the warning on the jar itself as well. We can advise on space, not on wording; check the wording with your regulator.
Can I use it for a tin candle?
Yes. Tins are lighter than glass, so an 18pt carton with a straight tuck often does the job for a 4 ounce tin. For tins over 8 ounces we still recommend the base lock. Because a tin has no shoulder, we replace the collar with a die-cut platform that the tin sits into, which stops it sliding.
How are candle boxes different from the candle shipper box?
The candle box is a retail folding carton on 20pt SBS, 24pt over 12 ounces, with an auto or crash lock base, a collar at the jar shoulder and a panel for the fire safety label. It belongs on a shelf or inside an outer box. The candle shipper box is an E-flute corrugated mailer with a die-cut cradle that holds the jar off the walls and floor, so it goes through a carrier on its own. Both start at 200 units; the carton runs 10 to 14 business days after proof and the shipper 10 to 12 business days. Retail candles need the carton; direct-to-customer orders need the shipper, or both.
