How to ship candles safely: the box, the cradle and the heat
To ship a candle safely, hold the jar still: an E-flute mailer with a die-cut cradle that grips the jar at the base and the shoulder, keeps glass off every wall and leaves half an inch of air under the base. Size the box to the jar, not with loose fill; an 8 oz jar ships in a 5 by 5 by 5 inch cradled mailer. Heat is the other risk, and the box can only limit the damage, so plan summer shipping around it.
How candles actually get damaged
- Rattle, then impact. A jar rarely breaks from one drop. It breaks after a day of knocking against a wall, then meeting a sorting belt corner-first. A box that holds the jar still prevents most breakage.
- Lid on lid. If the jar's lid touches the box lid, every knock on the top goes straight into the glass. Leave headroom above the lid.
- Heat. Wax softens in a hot delivery van. The surface slumps, the wick leans, and the candle arrives looking used. Soy and coconut waxes are softer than paraffin and suffer first.
- Scuffs. A loose candle rubs its label and its carton against the box walls, which matters as much as breakage when the candle is a gift.
The setup that works
For a candle sold online, one box does the job: a candle shipper box. It is E-flute corrugated at 32 ECT with a tuck-in lid, and a die-cut E-flute cradle with two collars, one at the base and one at the shoulder. The cradle is cut to the jar diameter plus 1/8 inch, with a half inch floor gap, so no glass touches a wall and the flute crushes on impact instead of the jar. A cradled 8 oz jar is built to take a 3 foot drop on every corner and edge. It is labeled and handed to the carrier as it is; an extra outer carton is paying twice for one job.
If the candle also has a retail carton, the carton goes inside the shipper's cradle, and the cradle is cut to the carton rather than the jar. Tell us both sizes when you ask for a quote.
Insert options by vessel
| Vessel | Best insert | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Glass jar or tumbler | Die-cut E-flute cradle, base and shoulder collars | Holds the jar off the walls and the floor; the flute takes the hit |
| Tins | Multi-cavity E-flute insert, no floor gap | Tins dent rather than shatter; a snug fit stops the dent |
| Ceramic vessel | Molded pulp insert or a die-cut foam insert | Irregular shapes need a contoured cavity; ceramic chips at the foot |
| Gift set, two to four jars | One cradle with a cavity per jar, board between each | Jars must never touch each other |
| Pillar candle, no vessel | Paperboard sleeve or collar inside a rigid box or mailer | Edges and corners mark easily; keep them off the walls |
Loose crinkle paper and bubble wrap are not inserts. They settle in transit, the jar migrates to a corner, and the corner is where the box takes its hits.
Sizing the shipper
- Measure the jar with everything that will be on it when packed: lid, dust cover, wooden wick, label, and the retail carton if there is one.
- Add 1/8 inch to the diameter for the cradle cut.
- Add the floor gap of half an inch and a little headroom above the lid.
- Choose the box from there. Common results: 4 by 4 by 4 inches for small jars, 5 by 5 by 5 for an 8 oz jar, 6 by 6 by 6 for a 12 oz jar, and 11 by 5 by 5 for two 8 oz jars side by side.
A box sized this tightly also lands in a lower carrier size band than a big box full of fill. Our carrier rates guide explains dimensional weight.
Summer heat
No paper box stops a van from getting hot. What the box can do is hold the jar upright, so a softened surface sets level again instead of sliding to one side, and keep a warm lid from being pulled off by wax that has stuck to it. That is why we cut the cradle to grip the jar walls rather than the lid on soft waxes. Leave the inside of the shipper uncoated, since film against a warm jar can mark it.
Beyond the box, the fixes are on your side: ship early in the week so parcels do not sit over a weekend, use faster services in the hottest months, and print a note on the insert card asking customers to let a candle stand for an hour before lighting. We do not make insulated liners or cold packs; if you need them for long summer transits, they sit inside a slightly larger shipper.
Test before you order the full run
Pack one candle exactly as it will ship, then drop it from about 3 feet onto a hard floor: each corner, each edge and each face. Open it after every few drops. If the glass is intact but the label is scuffed, the cradle is slightly loose. If the jar has moved toward a wall, the cradle is too loose. Physical prototypes are available on request, and timing is confirmed in the quote.
Questions people ask
What is the best box for shipping a candle?
An E-flute mailer with a die-cut cradle that holds the jar at the base and the shoulder, keeps the glass off the walls and leaves half an inch under the base. It is the outer box, so it ships with a label on it and no second carton.
What size box fits an 8 oz candle?
A standard 8 oz jar, about 3.5 inches wide and tall with the lid, ships in a 5 by 5 by 5 inch box with a cradle. A 12 oz jar needs 6 by 6 by 6, and two 8 oz jars fit an 11 by 5 by 5 inch box with a two-cavity cradle.
Can candles ship in their retail carton alone?
Not safely. A folding carton is built for a shelf, not a sorting belt. Put the carton inside a cradled shipper, with the cradle cut to the carton.
How do I stop candles melting in summer?
The box cannot stop the heat. It can keep the jar upright so the wax sets level again. Ship early in the week, use faster services in hot months and tell customers to let the candle rest before lighting.
How do I pack several candles in one box?
Give each jar its own cavity in one cradle, with board between the jars so they never touch. Two 8 oz jars fit an 11 by 5 by 5 inch box; four tins fit a 6 by 6 by 3 inch box with a four-cavity insert.
How is this guide different from your candle packaging guide?
This guide is about transit: breakage, heat, inserts and drop testing for the box that goes to the carrier. The custom packaging for candles guide covers both boxes a candle brand needs, including the shelf carton, warning text and gift options.
