24pt SBS paperboard
24pt SBS is the same white, clay-coated solid bleached sulfate board as 18pt, but 0.024 inch thick and close to 400 gsm. Stiffness rises much faster than thickness, so it carries glass over about 12 ounces, panels over 5 inches, sleeve and tray cartons and counter displays without bowing. For small, light products it is more board than you need.

When to choose it, and when not to
Choose 24pt when the carton has real work to do: a 200 ml cream jar, a 100 ml fragrance bottle, a tray that has to stay square under a sleeve, a counter display stacked with product. It also makes a better die-cut cradle for glass, because a 24pt insert holds its shape where 18pt flexes.
Skip it for small, light products, where it adds cost and freight weight without anything you can feel on the shelf; 18pt SBS is the right board there. If the product is heavy enough that even 24pt feels marginal, or the box is a keepsake, a rigid box on 1200 gsm grayboard is the step up.

Questions about 24pt SBS
When should I move from 18pt to 24pt SBS?
When the filled product passes about 12 ounces, which takes in most glass over 100 ml, when any panel is longer than 5 inches, or when the box has to hold its shape without the product inside it.
Will 24pt look different from 18pt on the shelf?
Not from the front. Both boards share the same white coated face, so print and finishes match. The difference is in the hand: a 24pt carton does not flex when someone picks up a heavy jar.
Does 24pt SBS cost more than 18pt?
The board costs more and it needs its own cutting die because of the wider crease, so price both on the quote. It is still far less than moving to a rigid box.
Can I mix 18pt and 24pt in one pack?
Yes, and it is common. A sleeve and tray carton often runs the tray on 24pt and the sleeve on 18pt, so the tray stays square and the sleeve slides easily.
