The 2 by 4 inch and 3 by 5 inch sizes suit most cosmetics, tea and gifts.

When to choose it, and when not to

Choose a paper tube with lid when a round product wants a round box: candles, bath salts, tea, deodorant sticks, roll-on oils, cocktail kits, socks and small gifts. A tube stands on a shelf without a hinge or a flap, opens with one hand, and the buyer keeps it. Kraft board with a one color print is the quickest and reads as natural; a full color wrap with foil on a white tube competes with a rigid box at a lower weight.

Choose a push up paper tube when the product is a stick that is applied straight from the container, since a lid tube is a box not a dispenser. Choose a magnetic closure box when the product is rectangular or needs a fitted insert with several cavities, because a tube only holds one thing.

Questions people ask

How do I measure for a tube?

Measure the widest diameter of the product and its height, then add 0.125 inch to the diameter and 0.25 inch to the height. Sizes are inside dimensions. For a candle jar, measure across the lid, not the glass, since the lid is usually wider. Send us a photo beside a ruler if you are not sure and we size it.

Printed wrap or printed direct?

A printed paper wrap gives you full color, foil, soft-touch and an unbroken surface, and is the standard for retail tubes. Direct one color flexo on kraft board is faster and suits a logo and a line of text. Both run from 200 units; the wrap adds about two days.

How thick is the wall?

0.06 in for tubes under 2 inches in diameter, 0.08 in for most retail tubes, 1/8 in for tubes over 4 inches or anything heavy like a wine bottle. A thicker wall feels more like a rigid box and holds its shape when the lid is pulled off hard.

Can the lid be a different color from the base?

Yes. The lid and the base take separate wraps, so a black lid on a kraft base or a foil lid on a matte base is no extra process. A common approach prints the lid top with the logo alone and put everything else on the side.

Is a paper tube recyclable?

The board and paper wrap are recyclable as mixed paper. A tinplate end is recyclable as metal but should be separated first. A soft-touch lamination on the wrap is a thin plastic film; if full paper recyclability matters to your brand, choose a matte varnish instead.

How is a paper tube with lid different from a telescoping tube?

The paper tube has a short slip-on lid, 0.75 to 1.5 inches deep, on a 0.06 to 0.12 in wall in kraft or white, printed on a paper wrap or direct, from 200 units in 10 to 14 business days after proof. The telescoping tube has a lid that slides the full depth of the base, so the closed tube shows one clean printed surface, on a 0.08 or 0.12 in wall with premium wraps, from 200 units in 12 to 14 business days. For candles, bath salts and tea, the tube with lid. For spirits, fragrance or a premium gift, the telescoping tube.
