Chocolate rigid box
1000 gsm, tray insert200 minimum · 12 to 14 business daysA chocolate rigid box is a wrapped 1000 gsm board box with a die-cut SBS tray inside, so each bonbon or truffle sits in its own cavity and never touches the wrapped walls. We produce them from 200 units in 12 to 14 business days after proof, with a lift-off, magnetic or ribbon lid. Common layouts are 6, 9, 12 and 24 cavities in a single layer.
When to choose it, and when not to
Choose a chocolate rigid box when you sell by the box and the box is what people give. A rigid lid, a tight tray and bonbons that arrive with their tops unmarked is the difference between a shop and a supermarket. The tray does the work: each piece has its own cavity, so nothing slides in transit and nothing scuffs. It suits bonbons, truffles, caramels, and single-origin bars sold as a set.
Choose a chocolate bar carton instead for single bars sold at volume, because a folding carton with a foil liner is the right pack for one bar and ships flat. Choose a window rigid box when the chocolates themselves are the decoration and you want them seen before the lid comes off.

Materials that suit it
Questions people ask
Is the tray food safe?
Yes. The tray is die-cut from 18pt SBS paperboard that is food-contact grade, and the gold version is a food-grade metallized paper laminated to the same board. The wrapped grayboard walls of the box are not rated for food contact, which is why every chocolate box we design has a tray or a paper cup between the chocolate and the box.
How do you size the cavities?
From your mold. Send the mold drawing or three finished pieces and we spec the cavity to the widest point of the piece plus 0.04 in. A bonbon should drop in and sit still without being pushed. For domed or oddly shaped pieces we spec a round or a square cavity slightly larger than the footprint; for bars we spec a slot.
Can the box have two layers?
Yes. A two-layer box stacks two trays with a card divider between them, and the divider has a ribbon lift so the top tray comes out cleanly. It roughly doubles the height, so a 12 piece single layer at 1.5 inches becomes a 24 piece box at about 2.75 inches. Two layers is the practical limit before the box looks like a block.
Will the chocolates arrive intact?
Inside a mailer, yes, in normal temperatures. The tray stops the pieces sliding and the rigid lid stops them being crushed. Heat is the risk, not the box, so for warm months we suggest an insulated mailer and an ice pack, and the rigid box goes inside it. We can supply the mailer to the same size.
Can I print inside the lid?
Yes, and on a chocolate box it is the place for a flavor map. A printed lid lining showing which piece is which, numbered to match the tray, does more for repeat orders than any outer print. It is done on the same wrap before assembly, so there is no extra process and no extra lead time.
How is the chocolate rigid box different from the chocolate bar carton?
The rigid box holds an assortment: wrapped 1000 gsm board, 1200 over 8 inches, with a die-cut food-contact SBS tray that gives every bonbon its own cavity, one or two layers, and it is kept after the chocolate is gone, from 200 units in 12 to 14 business days after proof. The chocolate bar carton is a slim 16pt food-contact SBS carton for one foil-wrapped bar that ships flat, from 200 units in 10 to 14 business days. Truffles and gift sets go in the rigid box; bars go in the carton.
