Hang tag

350 gsm, foil option200 minimum · 10 to 12 business days

A hang tag is a small printed card on 350 gsm board with a punched hole and a string, tied to a garment, a bottle or a bag to carry the brand, the price and the care text. We produce them from 200 units in 10 to 12 business days after proof, in stock shapes or a custom die-cut. Most tags are 2 by 3.5 or 2.5 by 4 inches.

When to choose it, and when not to

Choose a hang tag for apparel, candles, bottles, jewelry cards and anything sold without a box. It is the cheapest printed piece that touches the product, and it is what carries the story, the ingredients or the price without printing on the item. A kraft tag on hemp string reads as handmade; a soft-touch black tag with a foil mark reads as a label. It also works as a swing tag on a gift bag or tied through a box lid.

Choose a sticker and label sheet when the tag must stay on the product rather than swing from it, because a tag is tied and a label is stuck. Choose a thank you card when the piece goes inside the box with a message, since a tag is small and meant to be read from outside.

Questions people ask

What string comes with the tag?

Cotton, waxed cotton, hemp or a black elastic loop, in 6 or 8 inch lengths. Tags ship with strings loose by default, since tags are usually tied at packing. We pre-tie them as a small extra step, which saves you about 10 seconds per tag on a run of a few hundred.

Do I need an eyelet?

Not on 350 gsm art paper for a tag that hangs once. A metal eyelet, brass or silver, stops the hole tearing on a tag that gets handled a lot or on kraft, which tears more easily. It adds one step and looks finished. We usually suggest it for apparel tags and rarely for candle tags.

Can I print both sides?

Yes, and you should. The front carries the logo and the back carries the material, the care text, the size or a short line about who made it. Both sides print in the same pass at no extra lead time. Foil and deboss are one side only unless you ask for both.

Can the tag be a custom shape?

Any shape that can be cut with a die: a bottle outline, a leaf, a circle, a tag with a notch. A custom die adds one step and no lead time at 200 units. Sharp inside corners are the only thing we push back on, because they tear. We round them to 0.08 in on the proof.

Is kraft or art paper better?

Kraft with one color reads as handmade and hides scuffs, and it is the default for candles, soap and food. Art paper with soft-touch and foil reads as a label and photographs cleaner, so it suits apparel and jewelry. Both are 350 gsm and both tie the same way. There is no wrong answer.

How is a hang tag different from a gift tag?

A hang tag stays on the product: 350 gsm art paper, kraft or 18pt SBS, printed both sides with the brand, price and care text, with a punched hole, an optional metal eyelet and cotton, hemp or elastic string, from 200 units in 10 to 12 business days after proof. A gift tag goes on a wrapped gift: 300 gsm board with twine, room to write a name, and shapes like stars or luggage tags, from 200 units in 7 to 9 business days. Retail goods need hang tags; gift wrap needs gift tags.
