What is a magnetic closure box, and when it is the right box

Reviewed by Kathy Evans, Tria PackagingUpdated

A magnetic closure box is a rigid box made from 1000 to 1500 gsm grayboard, wrapped in printed paper, with a hinged lid that folds over the front and is held shut by a magnet hidden under the wrap. It opens flat, closes with a click, and arrives assembled. It suits packaging that will be kept or shown.

How it is built

Our magnetic closure box is one piece of board scored into a base, a back wall that rises into the lid, and a front flap that folds down over the front. Neodymium magnets are sunk into the front wall and the flap, then the whole thing is wrapped in printed paper so nothing shows. The paper is what carries the print, the foil and the deboss. The board is what carries the weight.

Because the lid is hinged at the back, it opens fully flat and stays out of the way. That is the difference from a two-piece box, where the lid comes off and has to go somewhere. It is also why the inside of the lid is a printed surface on a magnetic box and a hidden one on a two-piece.

Sizes that work and sizes that do not

The box works best between about 4 and 12 inches on the long side. Below 4 inches the flap is too short to hold a magnet with any conviction and the hinge is stiff. Above 14 inches the lid gets heavy, the hinge takes strain, and we move to two magnets and 1500 gsm board, which is still fine but no longer light. Common sizes are 8 by 6 by 3 and 10 by 8 by 4 inches.

Depth matters more than people expect. A magnetic box deeper than about 5 inches has a tall front flap and a big hinge, and the lid tends to sag over time. For a deep product, a drawer box or a two-piece is the better structure. Width is more forgiving, since the magnets can be doubled and the flap stays short.

When it is the right box

Choose it when the box will be kept, shown, or opened while someone watches. Fragrance, jewelry, spirits, a watch, a tech accessory, a gift set. The click and the flat-opening lid are the two things a magnetic box does that nothing else does, and both of them are about the moment of opening. It photographs well from every angle because there is no loose lid in the frame.

Choose something else when the product is heavy, since the magnet holds a lid and not a load. Choose a two-piece box for anything over about 3 pounds. Choose a sleeve and tray carton on 24pt SBS, or a collapsible rigid box, when you need the box to ship flat and be assembled at your bench, since a magnetic box arrives assembled and takes a carton of its own to freight.

An illustrative spec: a pendant box

Illustrative spec, not a client order.

Say a jewelry brand is shipping a pendant on a chain, 200 units, the magnetic closure box minimum. We would spec a 4 by 4 by 2 inch magnetic box on 1200 gsm board, matte ivory art paper wrap, one small blind deboss of the monogram on the lid, and a velvet-flocked die-cut insert with a slot for the pendant and a channel for the chain. Single 3/8 in magnet.

The box ships inside a 6 by 4 by 2 inch kraft mailer with a printed thank-you card on top. Expect 12 to 14 business days after proof. A physical prototype to check that the pendant sits centered is available on request, with timing confirmed in the quote. A later run with the wrap changed to a holiday color reuses the same deboss die.

What it costs you in lead time and freight

A magnetic box is hand wrapped and assembled, so it sits at the longer end of the lead times, 12 to 14 business days after proof. Foil or deboss can add time, and the quote confirms the schedule. It ships assembled, in cartons of 20 to 50 depending on size, so the freight to you is higher than for cartons and you need shelf space to hold them. Both are the price of a box that arrives finished and ready to fill.

Questions people ask

Will the magnet affect electronics or cards inside?

Not in practice. The magnets are small and sit in the front edge, well away from the base where a product rests. Headphones, watches and gift cards are all common contents. If the product is a mechanical watch, ask us and we will move to a ribbon closure to be safe.

Can the box be made without the flap, just a lid that lifts?

That is a different structure, a book-style box or a hinged lid box, where the lid is the full top and the magnets sit in the front edge of the lid itself. It opens like a book rather than folding a flap down. It suits wider shallow products like a set of stationery or a folded scarf.

Is a magnetic box recyclable?

The board and paper wrap are recyclable as mixed paper. The magnets are not and should be pulled out first, which takes a moment with a knife. The same box can be built with a ribbon or tuck closure if full recyclability matters to your brand.
