Spouted pouch

Laminate with spout200 minimum · 10 to 14 business days

A spouted pouch is a stand up bag with a plastic spout and screw cap welded into the top or a corner, so a liquid, puree, gel or sauce pours and reseals. We produce them, printed digitally, from 200 units in 10 to 14 business days after proof, on food-contact barrier laminate. The 4 ounce puree size and the 8 to 16 ounce sauce sizes are ordered most.

When to choose it, and when not to

Choose a spouted pouch for fruit puree, yogurt, smoothies, sauces, honey, energy gels, liquid soap refills and pet food gravies. It weighs a fraction of a bottle, ships flat, and the cap reseals without a mess. Kids' food and sports nutrition are the two markets where a spouted pouch is now what buyers expect rather than a novelty. A clear film shows the color of the product, and a foil film protects anything sensitive to light or oxygen.

Choose a stand up pouch with a zipper for anything dry or granular; a spout only makes sense for something that pours. Choose a bottle shipper box or a bottle with a carton when the product is carbonated, alcoholic or needs a rigid container for shelf presence.

Materials that suit it

Questions people ask

Where does the spout go, top or corner?

Corner spouts suit anything squeezed straight into the mouth, like puree or gel, because the pouch can be held in one hand. Top center spouts suit sauces and refills that are poured into another container. Both use the same 11/32 or 3/8 in PE spout with a tamper-evident cap. Tell us how the product is used and we place it.

How do I fill a spouted pouch?

Two ways. We ship them with the spout fitted and the bottom open, and you fill through the bottom and seal it on a band or impulse sealer at 5/16 in. Or the bottom comes sealed and you fill through the spout on a spout filler, which most co-packers have. Say which at the quote stage.

Can it be hot filled or retorted?

Hot fill up to about 185°F is fine on our standard PET/PE and foil laminates, which covers most sauces and purees filled straight from the kettle. Retort at 121 degrees needs a retort-grade laminate and spout, which we can source on request; ask before you design for it.

Is the film food safe?

Yes. Every laminate and spout we use is food-contact grade and the film documentation is supplied with the quote for your own records. For infant food, tell us and we run the phthalate-free cap and spout by default. The PE sealant layer on the inside is inert and does not flavor the contents.

How much does a 5 by 8 inch pouch hold?

About 8 fluid ounces with headspace for a clean seal. The 4 by 6.5 inch pouch holds 4 ounces, which is the standard kids' puree size, and the 6 by 9.5 holds 16 ounces for a sauce or a soap refill. Liquids are heavier than powders, so we test fill and check the base seal holds the weight.

How is a spouted pouch different from a stand up pouch?

The spouted pouch is a stand up bag with a PE spout and tamper-evident screw cap welded into the top or a corner, so liquids, purees, gels and sauces pour and reseal. The stand up pouch closes with a press-to-close zipper and suits dry goods. Both start at 200 units; the spouted pouch runs 10 to 14 business days after proof and the stand up pouch 10 to 12 business days. Anything that pours needs the spout.
