Coffee bag with valve

Kraft or matte laminate, degassing valve200 minimum · 10 to 14 business days

A coffee bag with valve is a barrier pouch fitted with a one-way degassing valve that lets carbon dioxide out of fresh roasted coffee without letting oxygen in. We produce them, printed digitally, from 200 units in 10 to 14 business days after proof, on kraft or matte foil laminate, as a stand up, flat bottom or side gusset bag. Roasters order the 12 ounce and 1 pound sizes most.

When to choose it, and when not to

Choose a valved coffee bag for any coffee packed within a week of roasting. Fresh beans release carbon dioxide for days, and a bag without a valve either balloons or has to be left open to vent, which lets oxygen in and stales the coffee. The valve solves both. Run kraft laminate for a farm or roastery look, matte black or white for a specialty shelf. Both take a full color print and a roast date panel.

Choose a plain flat bottom pouch without the valve for tea, cocoa, granola or ground coffee that has rested more than two weeks, since there is nothing to vent. Choose a coffee carton with an inner liner when the shelf needs a rigid box shape and the bag inside can be a plain valved liner.

Questions people ask

Do I really need a degassing valve?

If you pack within 7 to 10 days of roasting, yes. A pound of fresh roasted coffee gives off roughly 1 to 2 quarts of carbon dioxide in the first week. Without a valve the bag swells and the seals stress. If you rest coffee three weeks or more before bagging, or you sell ground coffee that has already degassed, you can skip it.

Where does the valve go?

On the back panel about a third of the way down for stand up and side gusset bags, or in a side gusset on flat bottom bags where it is hidden. It is heat-sealed before the bag is formed, so it does not affect the print on the front. Tell us if you want it visible as a feature or hidden.

Zipper or tin tie?

A pocket zipper is the cleaner retail option and reseals reliably. A tin tie is the classic roastery fold-over and costs less, but it does not seal against air. Most specialty roasters run a zipper on 12 ounce retail bags and a tin tie on 5 pound wholesale bags.

What barrier does coffee need?

A foil layer. Whole bean coffee loses noticeable aroma within two weeks in a metallized bag and within four to six weeks in a foil bag, sealed and valved. We run kraft or matte film over a PET/AL/PE structure, with very low oxygen transmission.

Can I leave a blank panel for the roast date and the origin?

Yes. The usual approach is a fixed printed design plus a label or a stamp for roast date, origin and tasting notes. We leave a matte panel where a 2 by 3 inch label sits flat and a rubber stamp takes. Tell us the label size and we mark it on the dieline.

How is a coffee bag with valve different from a flat bottom pouch?

The coffee bag is defined by the one-way degassing valve, heat-sealed into the back or gusset, on kraft/AL/PE, matte PET/AL/PE or metallized film, with a pocket zipper, press-to-close zipper or tin tie. The flat bottom pouch is a shape: a box-like bag with side gussets and a flat base that shows five printed panels, with a valve available on request. Both start at 200 units in 10 to 14 business days after proof. Fresh roasted coffee needs a valve in any shape; the flat bottom pouch is the premium shape to put it in.
