Spirits gift boxes: rigid vs carton, and the compliance notes

Reviewed by Kathy Evans, Tria PackagingUpdated

A filled 750 ml spirits bottle weighs about three pounds, so the box has to carry it from the base, not the lid: a rigid two-piece or shoulder box on 1500 gsm board with an insert is the gift box, and a 24pt auto lock bottom carton is the shelf box that ships flat. If the bottle is sold inside a sealed, opaque box, the box must carry all the mandatory label information under 27 CFR 5.62; if the bottle lifts out easily, the box only has to avoid conflicting with the bottle label. The bottle itself still needs its COLA-approved label and the government health warning.

The weight changes the structure

A filled 750 ml bottle runs about 2.8 to 3.5 pounds depending on the glass, and a tall bottle puts that weight on a small footprint. Anything that holds the bottle has to be lifted by the base. A magnetic closure box holds a lid shut; it does not hold three pounds against gravity if someone picks the box up by the lid. So for spirits the right builds are two-piece lid and base boxes, shoulder boxes where a deep lid sits over an inner neck, or hinged boxes with a base deep enough to take the whole bottle.

Board goes up as well. The spirits presentation box runs on 1500 gsm board, with an insert cut to your bottle so a 750 ml or 700 ml bottle stands or lies without moving. 1200 gsm board is fine for a 375 ml. On a two-piece lid and base box, the lid can stay lighter than the base, since it carries nothing.

The auto lock bottom carton holds around 4 pounds on 24pt board with the base fully seated, which covers a 750 ml bottle. Add an E-flute base pad for the bottle to sit on, soft-touch lamination and a foil wordmark, and it is the right box for a distillery that sells through stores and needs boxes to ship flat.

Sizes for the common bottles

Bottles are not standard, so we size to yours, but most 750 ml spirits bottles fall between 3 and 3.5 inches across and 11 to 13 inches tall with the closure. A two-piece box for those runs about 3.75 by 3.75 by 13 inches inside, with a lid 2.5 inches deep. A 375 ml is around 2.5 inches across and 9 inches tall and takes a 3 by 3 by 9.5 inch box. A gift set with a bottle and two glasses is a wider, shallow box, around 12 by 9 by 4 inches, with the bottle lying down in a cut cavity and the glasses either side.

Send us the bottle. Closures vary by half an inch between a cork and a screw cap, and a heavy base bottle can be a quarter inch wider at the shoulder than at the foot. A physical prototype, available on request with timing confirmed in the quote, is where this gets checked. Opening a collar by a sixteenth at prototype stage beats finding out at delivery.

What the label rules mean for the box

This is packaging guidance, not legal advice. TTB's rules for distilled spirits are in 27 CFR Part 5, and a producer should confirm current requirements with its compliance adviser before print. The parts that touch the box:

  • The bottle label comes first. Spirits bottled for sale need a Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) from TTB (TTB label approval basics). The bottle must carry the brand name, the class or type and the alcohol content in the same field of vision, plus the name and address of the bottler or distiller and the net contents (27 CFR 5.63). The container must also carry the government health warning under 27 CFR Part 16, which begins "GOVERNMENT WARNING:" in bold capitals. The box never replaces the bottle label.
  • A sealed, opaque box must repeat the mandatory information. If the bottle is enclosed in a sealed opaque covering or carton used for retail sale, that covering must bear all mandatory label information (27 CFR 5.62(b)).
  • A box the bottle lifts out of has more freedom. If the bottle is readily removable, the box may display any information that does not conflict with the bottle label. If the box shows the brand name or class and type, it must show them in full.
  • Prohibited statements apply to the box too. Anything that would be prohibited on the label, such as a misleading claim, is prohibited on the carton or gift box.

In practice, a two-piece box or a carton with a tuck end is a box the bottle lifts out of, so the simplest route is to keep the box consistent with the bottle label and leave the regulated text on the bottle. A window cut to show the bottle label is the other simple route for a retail carton. If you want a sealed or shrink-wrapped presentation, plan a back panel for the mandatory information, and we suggest printing the health warning there as well; it costs a few square inches and removes a question.

The full health warning reads: "GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems."

An illustrative spec: a limited bourbon

Illustrative spec, not a client order. Say a craft distillery is launching a limited bourbon in a 750 ml heavy-base bottle, 300 boxes. We would spec a two-piece lid and base box at 3.75 by 3.75 by 13 inches inside on 1500 gsm board, matte black art paper wrap, a 2.5 inch deep lid with a champagne foil wordmark on the front, and a blind deboss of the batch number on the lid top. Inside goes a two-layer die-cut collar insert in black, gripping the bottle at the shoulder and the foot, with a small notch so a finger can lift the bottle out.

Because the bottle lifts out, the box only needs to be consistent with the bottle label, and the back panel carries the brand, class and a short story in 9 point matte gray. For direct shipping, each box goes into a bottle shipper box with corner protection. Expect 12 to 14 business days after proof, plus prototype time if you ask for one, which is worth it on a heavy-base bottle whose shoulder may be wider than the drawing. For bottles that leave a tasting room by hand rather than by carrier, the wine and spirits carrier is the better box.

Questions people ask

Does a spirits gift box need the mandatory label information?

Only if the bottle is sealed inside an opaque box or covering used for retail sale; then the box must bear all mandatory label information under 27 CFR 5.62(b). If the bottle is readily removable, the box may show anything that does not conflict with the bottle label. The bottle always needs its own COLA-approved label.

Does the gift box need its own COLA?

TTB's label approval covers the label on the container. The box must not carry anything prohibited on a label and must not conflict with the approved bottle label, and a sealed opaque box must repeat the mandatory information. Confirm with TTB or your compliance adviser whether your specific box design needs review.

Can a gift box ship on its own with the bottle in it?

No. Neither a rigid box nor a carton is a shipping container for glass. Both go inside a corrugated shipper with corner protection or a molded pulp insert. Alcohol shipping also has carrier and state rules that sit outside the packaging.

Is a wooden box better than a rigid box for spirits?

Heavier, slower and harder to print. A 1500 gsm rigid box with a linen wrap reads as premium and weighs far less, which matters at 300 boxes going through a shipper. Wood suits a very small private release, not a launch.

Should I choose the spirits presentation box or the wine and spirits carrier?

Choose the spirits presentation box for a single bottle that is a gift in itself; it is a 1500 gsm rigid box with a fitted insert from 200 units in 12 to 14 business days. Choose the wine and spirits carrier for one to six bottles carried out of a shop or tasting room by hand; it is E-flute with a handle and divider, from 200 units in 10 to 14 business days.
