Smell proof bags: how odor barriers actually work
A bag is smell proof when two things are true: the film has a continuous aluminum foil layer, which odor, oxygen and moisture cannot pass through, and every seal is closed. A metallized film only reduces odor, a window breaks the barrier, and a press-to-close zipper leaks a little at the ends once the bag has been opened. For true odor control, use a PET, foil and PE laminate and heat seal above the zipper after filling.
Why ordinary bags let odor out
Odor is made of small, volatile molecules, terpenes in cannabis and citrus, aromatics in coffee and spices. Plastic films such as PE and PP are not solid walls to those molecules; they pass through slowly, so a sealed plastic bag still smells. Paper is worse. The only common packaging layer that stops them almost completely is metal foil.
How a foil laminate is built
Our smell proof mylar bag is a three-layer foil laminate, 4 to 5 mil in total:
- PET outside. Strength, puncture resistance and the print surface.
- Aluminum foil in the middle. Usually about 0.3 mil. Its oxygen and odor transmission rate is close to zero, and it blocks light completely.
- PE inside. The food-contact layer and the heat seal.
"Mylar" is the everyday name for this kind of bag, though the word strictly refers to the PET film. Not every bag sold as mylar has foil in it.
Foil, metallized or clear: what each one does
| Film | Odor | Light | Window possible | Where we use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PET / foil / PE | Blocks it while sealed | Blocks fully | No | Smell proof mylar bag, coffee, flat bottom pouches |
| Metallized PET / PE | Reduces it | Blocks most | Yes, but the window is unprotected | Child resistant mylar bag, snacks with oil |
| Clear or matte PET / PE | Little effect | None through clear areas | Yes | Dry snacks, tea, bath products |
| Kraft / PE | Little effect | Blocks it, kraft is opaque | Yes | Natural-look dry goods |
We do not run nylon-foil or activated carbon bags. For odor, a properly sealed foil laminate already does the job those are sold for.
The seal matters as much as the film
Odor gets out through gaps, not through foil. The weak points are:
- The zipper. A press-to-close zipper reduces odor but is not a hermetic seal; some escapes at the ends. Product dust in the track makes it worse.
- The top seal. For a bag that must hold odor until it is sold, heat seal above the zipper after filling and let the buyer open it at the tear notch. Sealed that way, no odor gets out.
- Creases and pinholes. A bag folded hard, or overfilled and stuffed into a carton, can crack the foil at the fold. Size the bag so it is not straining at the seams.
Once the bag has been opened and resealed with the zipper, it is odor resistant, not smell proof. That is true of every zipper bag, and it is worth saying plainly on your product page.
Child resistant and smell proof in one bag
Our smell proof bag runs with a standard or a child resistant zipper, from 200 units either way. The child resistant zipper is tested to 16 CFR 1700.20, and the test documentation is available on request. If your state requires both child resistance and odor control, say so at the quote stage and we spec the foil film with the CR zipper. This is packaging guidance, not legal advice. For the closure rules themselves, see child resistant mylar bags explained.
Sizes that get ordered
| Bag | Typical fill |
|---|---|
| 3.5 x 5 in | 3.5 g |
| 4 x 6.5 in | 7 g |
| 5 x 8.5 in | 14 g |
| 6 x 9 in | 28 g |
| 8 x 12 in | 1 lb |
Any size from 3 by 4 to 12 by 18 inches is possible. Size close to the product, with room above it for the zipper and the heat seal; a bag with a lot of empty space traps more aroma that rushes out when it is opened.
Who needs it besides cannabis
Roasted coffee, strong spices, loose tea with a heavy aroma, pet treats and dried fish all benefit, either to keep their own aroma in or to keep it from reaching everything else in a shipping box. For coffee, the coffee bag with a valve uses the same foil film with a one-way degassing valve.
Questions people ask
What makes a bag truly smell proof?
A continuous foil layer in the film and closed seals. Foil has an odor and oxygen transmission rate close to zero; a heat seal above the zipper closes the last gap until the bag is opened.
Is a metallized bag smell proof?
No. Metallized film is PET with a very thin vapor-deposited coating. It blocks most light and reduces odor, but it is odor resistant rather than smell proof. For true odor control you need foil.
Can a smell proof bag have a window?
Not if it is to stay smell proof, because a window breaks the foil layer. We can run a windowed metallized bag instead and describe it honestly as odor resistant.
Is the bag still smell proof after it is opened?
Much less so. A press-to-close zipper reduces odor but is not a hermetic seal, and some escapes at the zipper ends. That is true of any zipper bag.
Can I get a smell proof bag with a child resistant zipper?
Yes. The same foil film runs with a child resistant zipper tested to 16 CFR 1700.20, with test documentation available on request, from 200 units.
Does activated carbon help?
We do not make carbon-lined bags. Carbon adsorbs odor until it is saturated and then stops. A sealed foil laminate blocks odor without wearing out, which is why we build on foil instead.
