Eco-friendly mailer box claims: what you can print on a corrugated mailer
A plain, unlaminated corrugated mailer can usually carry a 'recyclable' claim, plus a recycled content figure if the board supplier documents it and 'printed with water-based ink' if it was printed that way. What breaks those claims on a mailer is the build around the board: film lamination, soft-touch, plastic tape, a foam insert or a poly outer. This guide covers mailer boxes only; our broader eco packaging claims guide covers every format and the general wording rules.

The rule in one paragraph
In the US, environmental claims on packaging are judged against the FTC's Green Guides, 16 CFR Part 260. A claim must be specific, true for the whole package or clear about which part it covers, and backed by evidence. For recyclable claims, the Guides say an unqualified claim is fine when recycling facilities are available to a substantial majority of consumers where the item is sold, which they put at 60 percent. Corrugated board generally clears that bar; the add-ons on a mailer are what put it at risk.
This is packaging guidance, not legal advice.
Check every part of the mailer
| Part of the mailer | Effect on a recyclable claim | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
| E-flute corrugated board | Fine | This is the part the claim rests on |
| Water-based flexo ink | Fine | Lets you add "printed with water-based ink" |
| Digital or offset print with aqueous coating | Generally fine | Matte aqueous is water-based and thin |
| Gloss or soft-touch lamination | Puts the claim at risk | A plastic film over board; drop it or drop the claim |
| Foil or spot UV | Gray area | Keep it to a small mark if you want the recyclable line |
| Plastic tape | Not part of the box, but users see it | Supply paper tape if you print "plastic-free" |
| Die-cut E-flute or paperboard insert | Fine | Recycles with the box |
| Molded pulp insert | Fine | Recyclable as mixed paper |
| EVA or PE foam insert | Not recyclable at the curb | Say which part is recyclable, or switch to pulp |
Which Tria mailers fit which claim
Our eco kraft mailer box is built for this: unbleached liners on both faces, water-based ink, no coating and a die-cut insert in the same board, so the box and insert recycle together as mixed paper. A standard kraft mailer or white mailer with an aqueous coating supports the same recyclable line. A full color mailer finished with soft-touch lamination does not, and we will flag that at the quote.
Recycled content on a mailer
Recycled content in corrugated varies by mill and grade. Print a figure only when the board supplier's documentation for that run confirms it, and print the number rather than "made with recycled materials". Do not round up. If the documentation is not available for your board, leave the line off.
Compostable is a different product
We do not print a compostable claim on corrugated mailer boxes. A compostable claim needs certification for the specific item and a stated facility type. If a compostable shipper matters to the brand, our compostable mailer is a soft bag with certification documentation supplied with the quote; the compostable mailer certifications guide explains what that documentation means.
The recycling symbol on a mailer
Under the Green Guides the chasing arrows read as a recyclable claim, so use them only when the whole mailer qualifies, or put a line beside them saying which part does. California adds its own rules through SB 343; our broader claims guide covers its current status.
Where to print it
On the base of the mailer or the inside of the tuck flap, the surfaces the customer sees when breaking the box down. Set it at about 7 to 9 point in the box's own typeface. One or two lines, one number, one request to recycle.
Questions people ask
Can I put the recycling symbol on my mailer box?
Yes, if the whole mailer is recyclable, which an unlaminated corrugated mailer with a paper insert generally is. If any part is not, such as a foam insert or a laminated finish, either remove it or add a line saying which part is recyclable. California has its own rules for the symbol; check them for California-bound boxes.
Does soft-touch lamination stop a mailer being recyclable?
It puts the claim at risk. Soft-touch and gloss lamination are plastic films bonded to the board, and many mixed paper programs reject film-laminated board. A matte aqueous coating gives a similar soft look while keeping the board recyclable.
Can I call a kraft mailer box compostable?
We do not print that claim on corrugated mailers. A compostable claim needs certification for the specific item and a stated facility type. If compostability matters, our compostable mailer bag comes with certification documentation supplied with the quote.
Does the insert count toward the claim?
Yes. A claim on the box is read as a claim about the whole package. A die-cut E-flute or paperboard insert or a molded pulp tray recycles with the box. An EVA or PE foam insert does not, so either qualify the claim or switch the insert.
When should I read the broader eco packaging claims guide instead?
Read eco packaging claims you can back for pouches, cartons, rigid boxes and bags, for the general Green Guides wording rules, and for California SB 343. This guide only covers corrugated mailer boxes.
