Grease resistant kraft200 minimum · 10 to 12 business days

A bakery bag is a grease resistant kraft paper bag for bread, pastries and cookies, in flat, side gusset or window styles. The paper is food-contact grade and printed with one or two color water-based ink. We produce them from 200 units in 10 to 12 business days after proof. The most common sizes are 6 by 2 by 9 and 8 by 3 by 12 inches.

When to choose it, and when not to

Choose a bakery bag for anything that goes over the counter warm or goes home the same day: croissants, cookies, bagels, a loaf. The grease resistant paper keeps butter from soaking through onto the customer's hands or bag, and a one color logo on kraft is enough to make it yours. The window style is the one that sells, because people buy what they can see.

Choose a bakery box with window when the item can be crushed, such as a tart or a decorated cookie, since a bag gives no structure. Choose a cookie box when the product is a gift or ships in the mail, because a paper bag is a same-day carrier and nothing more.

Questions people ask

Is the paper safe for direct food contact?

Yes. The grease resistant kraft we use is food-contact grade and the inks are water-based and printed on the outside only. The window film is PLA or glassine, both suitable for direct contact with baked goods. We do not print inside a bakery bag for this reason.

Will butter soak through?

Not on the 50 gsm grease resistant grade, which holds a warm croissant for hours without a mark. The 35 gsm grade resists grease but a very buttery pastry left overnight can show a faint shadow. For anything laminated or fried, take the 50 gsm and add the glassine liner.

Which window material should I choose?

Glassine is paper, breathes a little, and is the choice for bread that should not go soft. PLA is clearer and shows color better, so it suits iced cookies and pastries. Both are 2 to 4 inches wide. A window bag takes one extra step at the press and no extra lead time.

Can I get a full color bakery bag?

Full color on 35 to 50 gsm paper is not something we recommend, because the paper is too thin to hold register and the color looks washed on kraft. One or two color flexo is the honest format for this product. If you need full color, a sticker label on the fold is the way.

Are bakery bags compostable?

The unbleached kraft body with water-based ink is recyclable as mixed paper when clean and accepted by many municipal compost programs, so check yours. A PLA window is compostable only in industrial facilities, and a glassine window is fine in paper recycling. We will not add a compostable claim to the print unless you have checked your local program.

How is the bakery bag different from the bread bag?

The bakery bag is grease-resistant kraft paper, 35 to 50 gsm, food-contact grade, in flat, side gusset or window styles, for pastries, cookies and bagels that go home the same day, from 200 units in 10 to 12 business days after proof. The bread bag is a long, narrow bag in poly or glassine, sized for a loaf or baguette, left open for a twist tie or clip so the customer reuses it as the loaf goes, with optional vent perforations, from 1,000 units in 8 to 10 business days. Pastries suit the bakery bag; whole loaves suit the bread bag.
